Slovenian clarinetist Tomaž Zevnik is known for his virtuosity and versatility across many genres, and performs in a colourful selection of projects, such as ethno ensemble Gugutke, contemporary music theater ensemble Synesthetic Project, and swing band Pickpocket Swingers.

He is a regular guest with jazz-fusion project Mimika Orchestra in Croatia and also performs with classical trio Yokuze, swing band Jump Session, dixieland ensemble Oberdixie Band, Slovenian performer and composer Janez Dovč and with Slovenian songwriter Robert Petan. He also joined Big Band Grosuplje at International Nišville Jazz Festival where he performed Duke Ellington’s Far East Suite.

In addition to collaborating with various ensembles, Tomaž often works with young composers such as Ana Zlobko (SLO), Jaka Pucihar (SLO), Mak Murtić (CRO) and Janez Dovč (SLO). In 2022, he appeared as a guest soloist on Mak Murtić’s jazz-fusion album from Mimika OrchestraAltur Mur” which has received international acclaim and praise.

He premiered Ana Zlobko’s “Jazz Concert for Clarinet and Orchestra” (2018) with Wind Orchestra Academy of Music Ljubljana in Slovenian Philharmonics Hall, the first Slovenian concerto of this genre written for clarinet.

In 2020, Tomaž joined ethno ensemble Gugutke, a musicaly vibrant quintet which draws its repertoire from folkloric tunes from the balkan regions fused with each members improvisation skills. Their performances on the National television and radio (RTV) and Slovenian festivals have put them on the radar for many festivals across Europe. In 2023, Gugutke will release their solo album which will be followed by a tour in Czech Republic, Austria and Italy.

As a soloist, Tomaž is a top-prize winner in national (TEMSIG; two gold medals) and international competitions in Italy (Carlino; 3rd prize) and Serbia (Požarevac; 2nd prize). As a chamber musician, he won first prize Svirel International Competition.

In August 2023 he was a mentor at a clarinet masterclass Klarinetkanje alongside a world-renowned clarinet soloist Mate Bekavac and Matic Kuder (E-flat clarinetist with the Berlin Philharmonics). By the end of the masterclass Tomaž performed two solo pieces as a soloist and a conductor with a clarinet choir composed by academy professors and students.
In the same month he led a worhshop at a Youth Symphony Orchestra in Ljubljana by the direction of Živa Ploj Peršuh.

Tomaž holds a Masters Degree in clarinet performance from Academy of Music in Ljubljana, where he studied with Slavko Goričar. He started playing at the age of 8, his mentor was Igor Požar. During his student years he attended masterclasses, workshops and Academy classes where he was mentored by Alojz Zupan, Andrej Zupan, Boris Karaev, Tomaž Lorenz, Aleš Kacjan and Primož Fleischmann.

Since July 2024 Tomaž is a Henri Selmer Paris artist.
